VC at LASUSBAS Orientation, reels out interventions in Badagry Campus, warns students against vices

Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, on Monday, 9th January 2023, attended the Orientation Programme of the Lagos State University School of Basic and Advanced Studies (LASUSBAS) formerly known as LASU Foundation JUPEB Programme, where she opened a newly constructed two-winged cafeteria and reeled out the massive interventions of her administration at the Badagry Campus in the last 15 months.

Prof. Olatunji-Bello, on her arrival at the Badagry Campus with Members of the University Management and some Directors in the University, straightaway opened an ultra-modern cafeteria constructed by the administration for staff and students. She also inspected other ongoing projects on the Campus and expressed satisfaction before delivering her address to the eager students.

In her speech, the Professor of Physiology, while congratulating the students on their admission to the School, explained that LASUSBAS is an upgrade on the Jupeb Foundation formerly being run on the Campus. "Since we had the last Orientation Programme, a lot of positive changes have taken place on this Campus, the most obvious being the change in the nomenclature of this Programme, from the Lagos State University Foundation Jupeb Programme to the Lagos State University School of Basic and Advanced Studies Programme. The Senate of our University approved a proposition on change of name to reflect and accommodate wide range of Academic Programmes which we have now introduced for benefit of our people."

She described the programme as the best A' Level Programme in the country on the strength of the performances of students in recent years: "...I also congratulate your parents and sponsors for making the very smart choice to send you here to receive the best A’Level Education offered anywhere in Nigeria. I say this because the performances of our students in previous years supports this assertion that we have one of the best schools here in Nigeria, and this reflects positively on the professionalism, diligence and hardwork of our members of staff led by the resourceful Director of the programme, Prof. Yunus Dauda and his team."

While noting that her administration has invested massively in the development of the Campus, she listed the construction of a new security house and motorcycle, collaboration with security agencies to enhance security of staff and students, procurement of a new ambulance and two generators, installation of CCTV monitoring cameras, laptops, and other pertinent electronic devices for monitoring, ease and effectiveness, as some of her administration's interventions in addition to the new cafeteria.

In addition, she assured the students that her administration would continue to increase admission opportunities for candidates who graduate from the programme. "As long as you meet the cut-off mark, we shall ensure that you are not denied admission into the 200 Level of our prestigious university", VC said.

Finally, the Vice Chancellor warned the students against vices capable of hampering their studies in the school. Her words "...embrace hardwork, shun vices such as cultism, cybercrimes, popularly known as yahoo yahoo, sexual and gender-based violence, drug and alcohol consumption and examination malpractices. If you are found indulging in any of these, you shall face the penalty. Remember, to be forewarned is to be forearmed."

Director of the programme, Prof. Yunus Dauda, in his speech, revealed that the new school is divided into four major programmes : JUPEB Examination, International Qualifying Examination in UK, USA and Canada, Leadership Training and Students Mentoring and Professional Bodies Assistance, Conference Supports and Community Service, and thanked the Vice Chancellor for her interventions in the school.

The Orientation programme featured lectures from resource persons in the university, cultural dance, amongst others.
