The Centre for General Nigerian Studies (CGNS) in collaboration with the Directorate of Information and Communication Technology (DICT) on *Monday, 29th January 2024*, conducted a training session for newly admitted students at LASU. The training, which focused on GNS and Computer-Based Test (CBT) enrollment, took place at the Buba Marwa Auditorium, main campus, Ojo, Lagos.
Prof. M. O .B. Mohammed, the Director of CGNS, opened the event on behalf of Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, Vice Chancellor, Lagos State University, expressing gratitude to the facilitators and students who were in attendance at the training. He highlighted the significance of the training, which aimed to familiarise freshers with IT and the use of CBT. Prof. Mohammed emphasised the importance of the GNS compendium, the flipped classroom teaching method, and the App for continuous assessment. Additionally, he mentioned that certificates would be issued to all students who attended the training and filled out the online attendance form.
Speaking further, Prof. Mohammed charged the newly admitted students to stay abreast of the information that will be given at the programme. In his words...."If you're in LASU, you must be online. It is only when you are online that you can be in line. Anyone who is not online and is not in line will be offline, " he asserted.
Prof. Toyin Enikuomehin, the Director, DICT, during his speech, stressed the importance of the "Do it Yourself" (DIY) approach to online enrollment. He pointed out that many students tend to rely on cyber cafes, leading to technical issues that can only be resolved at the ICT centre. Prof. Enikuomehin highlighted LASU's reputation as the most technologically advanced university and encouraged students to handle their enrollment independently.
Mr. Martin Adekoya, the Principal Assistant Registrar of CGNS, provided valuable guidance on GNS courses, including GNS 111, 104, 112, 212, and 312. He emphasised that these courses have been duly endorsed by the NUC (National Universities Commission). Mr. Adekoya further emphasised the importance of being informed and paying attention to details, stating that students would be at a disadvantage without proper information. He averred that the collection of the GNS compendium requires a printed receipt from the LASU website.
The training included presentations by Mr. Samuel Fadipe, the Deputy Director Analyst (Head, Hardware Unit), who discussed the rudiments of LASU GNS CBT enrollment. Mr. Babatunde Asiyanbi, the Deputy Director Analyst (Head, Networking Unit), spoke about seeking technical solutions and solving problems during CBT examinations.
