Idimogu congratulates Sanwo-Olu on his re-election, saying he is a man of history & destiny

Honourable (Dr) Jude Chukwuemeka Omobowale Idimogu, the lawmaker representing Oshodi/Isolo Constituency 2 in the Lagos House of Assembly, has congratulated the Executive Governor of Lagos State, His Excellency, Mr Babajide Sanwo-olu, on his overwhelming electoral victory” as the governor-elect of the State.

According to Idimogu in a statement signed by his SA on Media and Publicity, Mr Henry Uzodinma, your victory is “no doubt, a confirmation of the people’s confidence in your leadership capabilities and a proof of the unbreakable bond of friendship and solidarity between you and the good people of the State”.

“You are, indeed, a man of history and destiny. Your remarkable victory which culminated in the defeat of other contestants in the concluded Guber election is a clear proof of your sterling attributes, hard work, political sagacity, perseverance and tenacity.

“The fact that you are imbued with these traits and yet remain humble is what makes you a consummate politician and leader of the people whose cause you champion unreservedly.

“I also congratulate our great party, the All Progressive Congress (APC) whose steadfastness, courage and vigilance made this victory, a reality.

“The quest by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to reinvent itself and ensure that the sanctity of the WILL of the people, expressed through the ballot box remains an article of faith is quite commendable".

“The determination by the electoral umpire to ensure that votes not only count but is the sole basis for determining the outcome of elections has further boosted the confidence of Nigerians in our Democracy" Idimogu opined.

Obstruction, organised violence limited free expression of will of voters, says EU

European Union Election Observation Mission for the Nigeria’s 2023 General Elections has come out with a verdict of what it observed during the election, saying that the exercise was largely marred by obstructions and organised violence which limited the free expression of the will of the voters, despite efforts by civil society to promote democratic standards.

According to a release, Chief Observer Barry Andrews, Member of the European Parliament, presented the second preliminary statement of the European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) to Nigeria on the 18 March Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections.

He said “Throughout the mission we saw that Nigerians have a great appetite for democracy and are keen to engage in various civic activities. However, in many parts of the country, their expectations were not met. Many were disappointed and we witnessed voter apathy that is in part a clear consequence of failures by political elites and, unfortunately, also by INEC,” said the Chief Observer Barry Andrews.

Positively, INEC introduced some corrective measures ahead of Saturday’s polls, allowing a timely delivery of sensitive materials and improved use of election technologies, yet the institution continued to lack transparency.

EU EOM observers also noted that voting on 18 March mostly started on time, with INEC ad-hoc officials present and ready to serve the voter. However, polling on election-day was disrupted by multiple incidents of thuggery and intimidation of voters, polling officials, observers, and journalists.

He stated that Lagos, Kano, and other states in the southern and central part were most affected. Unfortunately, there were many casualties and fatalities. Vote-buying, also directly observed by EU EOM observers, further detracted from an appropriate conduct of the elections.

Andrews disclosed that Campaigns in state elections were competitive. Fundamental freedoms of assembly and movement were largely respected. However, insecurity impeded the canvass for votes in certain parts of the country and organised violent attacks shortly before the elections in several states led to a fearful atmosphere. He said some states governors took executive actions, negatively affecting the campaign environment.

EU EOM observers also saw misuse of administrative resources, including through various financial and in-kind inducements to voters, giving an undue advantage to the party in power. Furthermore, the protracted deadlines for candidacy disputes created uncertainty for voters and electoral contestants alike, while clear underrepresentation of women as candidates demonstrated a stark lack of internal party policies to support constitutionally prescribed inclusion, also contrary to Nigeria’s international commitments to eradicate discrimination against women.

He said “The EU EOM commends the civil society, media, and fact-checkers’ commitment to promote democratic standards, as shown between the elections by raising awareness and providing electoral information of public interest to voters, by organising debates and by striving to preserve the integrity of the online space. Also, the deployment of more than 10,000 citizen observers on the election day positively contributed to the transparency of elections,” said the Chief Observer Barry Andrews.

Good governance, infrastructural development have made way for you, NCP leadership, members congratulate Sanwo-Olu

The Leadership and entire members of the National Conscience Party (NCP) have joined millions of other Nigerians to congratulate His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu on his re-election as the governor of the state for the second term.

In a press statement signed by the leadership of the party that include Comrade Waheed Lawal, Acting National Chairman; Comrade Adebola Lateef, National Secretary and Pastor Peters Omoragbon, National Deputy Chairman (South-South), the NCP disclosed that the re-election of Governor Sanwo-Olu did not come as a surprise. “The NCP is not surprised at your victory at the end of the keenly contested election on March 18, 2023 because the results of all your past governance in the last four years when you were sworn in as governor has terminated all the insults by the opposition. From infrastructural developments to the construction of the Lekki Seaport, modern railway lines, roads and bridges are testaments of a tested and proven leader like your good-self.”

The party while calling Sanwo-Olu a Unifier appealed to him to use his good office to heal the wounds deliberately created by certain elements within the state to create undue crisis. “It is in the light of the above that the NCP would admonish that in your usual characteristics as a Unifier, to heal the wounds deliberately created by certain elements within the state to create undue crisis using ethnic and religious sentiments in a cosmopolitan, multi-cultural, multi-ethnic and multi-religious state like Lagos.”

According to the release, the party maintained that aside campaigning assiduously for the progressive governors like Sanwo-Olu, the party would not hesitate to support the administration in Lagos in whatever capacity if called upon to do so. “The NCP in line with the directives given at the end of the NEC/NCC Meeting held on February 22, 2023 where His Excellency Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu was endorsed as our Presidential Candidate, the party further directed that each state Chapter endorse and support progressive governors in their various states irrespective of party affiliations. We in the NCP worked assiduously by campaigning for your eventual victory and others in the federation. The Party remains committed to a united Lagos State and Nigeria

“The party would not hesitate to support your Excellency in whatever capacity if called upon to offer such support for the good of the people of Lagos.”

Emulate Gbajabiamila, Babaloja of Tejuosho tasks politicians, presents Charter of Demands to Eliot

Babaloja of Tejuosho Ultra-Modern Market, Phase2, Eze (Pastor) Okey Anorue, has tasked politicians to emulate the Honourable Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, whom he said has performed exceptionally well.

Okey Anorue who is also Ezesinachi, the Eze Ndigbo of Igbogbo Kingdom, made the disclosure when the lawmaker representing Surulere State Constituency who is also the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming House of Assembly Election, Honourable Desmond Eliot, visited the Igbo Stakeholders at Tejuosho in Lagos on Thursday, March 16, 2023.

He stated that if politicians can emulate the speaker, Nigeria would be an Eldorado. He said “We appreciate our apex leader here, Right Hon. Femi Gbajabamila, he is a very good man, he is our father as far as Surulere is concerned. How I wished every constituency has such a man, Nigeria would not have had any problem; He would have solved the problems we are going through today, how I wished we have such a person, he is definitely a pacesetter to other constituency.

“In the area where I come from in Imo State, I don’t know whether a senator exists or if a House of Assembly member exists, they are not there. But here in Surulere we have what is called dividend of democracy.”

Speaking on the reason for bringing the Igbo traders under one umbrella, Anorue who was the convener of the meeting said “As the Babaloja of Tejuosho Market, I am one of the eyes of Igbo people within our environment, my previous position was the chairman of Yaba Traders Union, and many of them have collapsed to Surulere and they find themselves in different catchment areas, not all of them are in Tejuosho Market, I believe as one of them who have been over there, I must carry all of them in different catchment along, that was why I demanded the local government chairman and the House of Assembly member to join us and come and address the Igbo Stakeholders, I need to bring all of them together so that we can appeal to them to speak with one voice to support the incumbent Governor of Lagos State and our own, Hon. Eliot. This is exactly what I tried to do today. As a pacesetter, I need to do the needful.”

He spoke further, “We the people, all the catchment areas and the entire Igbo traders around the environment are feeling bad, we are not beneficiary of anything, and which is a serious concern, and many of them dwell within this circle, if every man, his wife, children, family and his apprentices have their PVC, you are talking of, maybe, six votes in one flat and many of them are living within the same environment, so you need to engage them.”

Speaking on the General Charter of Demands which was presented to the Lawmaker, Anorue said “It is not about telling the people to go and vote without turning in any charter of demand. Our own charter of demand is that they should look into the high rate of tenement rate on every shop and the level of touts threatening the traders, they should also look into it, and many other things. We need to let them know; because these people, it is not when it is election time you use them and dump, make them to be part of the system.”

At the event attended by the Surulere Local Government area, Honourable Sule Yusuf, the Babaloja encouraged the stakeholders to go back to their wards and convince their people on the need to vote Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Desmond Eliot “With this I am encouraging our people to do the needful, so that after this Saturday, when the results start rolling in, it will be good news, testimonies and the celebration will be all ours.”

He made it clear that if other markets are tagged against APC, the traders in Tejuosho and its environs would not want their markets to be tagged against APC. “This is an international market, the market that is at the center of Surulere, that produced the speaker, strong men and who is who in politics of APC in Nigeria, and we are not going to be the ones to devour this ongoing development. I know that there are many of our youths who have no jobs, who have nothing to do, some are those whose businesses, in one way or the other, have collapsed, I know opportunity of fitting them into the business of the day will soon come where we can present their names, and let the needful be done to them.”

He said there is need to carry the Igbos along as according to him, what is good for the goose is also good for the gander.

Hon. Desmond Eliot in his response said the Igbos in Surulere are important to him. “What we are trying to say is that you all are important to us, that is why we made sure we are complete here in order to hear you out, the party chairman in Surulere is here, the Chairman of the local government is here, the Chief of General Staff to the Honourable Speaker of the House of Representatives is here. As you show me love, we also urge you to show the same love to Governor Sanwo-Olu, the Executive Governor of the State who is going for second term, because we would want to work with someone we can talk to, if you put someone there we cannot talk to, it will be difficult.

“As far as Sururlere is concern, we have heard you, we will be here for you, please, do our bidding and God will bless you,” Eliot stated.

The chief of general staff to Honourable Speaker of House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, thanked the stakeholder for being instrumental to the election of the speaker for the six term, which he described as unprecedented in the annals of Nigeria, adding that his election was a testament to the Speaker’s performance in office, adding that he is ready to continue to perform. He said the speaker is a detribalized Nigerian who treats all people equally.

Hon. Commissioner representing Anambra State in the Public Complaint Commission, Lolo Emelda Nwajiofor-Okoli, appealed to his brothers and sisters to vote for Desmond and Sanwo-Olu. She tasked her Igbo people not to put her to shame and make sure they voted APC on Saturday. She also urged those that were harbouring any grievances to calm down.

Okoli promised the traders that if Desmond is voted she will personally take them to Alausa, where they will table their demands, especially on issue of tenement rates. She thanked Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila whom she said was instrumental to her rise in politics. She urged the traders to vote APC in the forthcoming elections.

One Billion Rising partners IRISE Nigeria, rises for freedom at King Chucks Schools, Altitude College on Valentine’s Day

One billion Rising, the biggest mass action to end violence against women and girls around the world in conjunction with IRISE Nigeria, has taken this year’s campaign for the freedom of the girl-child to the young people at King Chucks Schools and Altitude College all in Agor Palace, Lagos State, Nigeria.

The event which was held on Tuesday, February 14, 2023 was also designed to celebrate the Valentine’s Day with the children of both schools.

With the theme, ‘Rise for Freedom’ the event was also meant to educate the children on the true meaning of Valentine and not the erroneous interpretation given to it, hence the immorality being perpetuated by the young ones on the Valentine’s Day.

The 2023 campaign spelt out its objectives which include rising to end violence against women and girls; freedom to bodily autonomy, freedom to live in immunocompromised body, rise for economic freedom, freedom for women and girls to leadership, dismantling patriarchy, end sex for grades, and end violence towards the earth.

The children were also tutored that they are academic friends and they should therefore, be their brothers and sisters’ keeper.

Omodele Ibitoye Ejeh, who is the One Billion Rising Coordinator in Nigeria and Executive Director, IRISE, an Initiative to Resist Institutional Slavery and Exploitation, spoke on the reason for the occasion. She said “To create a new culture that promotes young people’s freedom from all forms of oppressions and exploitations is everyone’s responsibility. One Billion Rising organises big rising events/campaigns in Nigeria to call attention to violence and all forms of oppressions against girls, women and the marginalised persons. One Billion Rising in Nigeria works with Initiative to Resist Institutional Slavery and Exploitation, IRISE and grassroots movements to reach women, girls, male allies and our local communities.”

Ejeh also hinted that the organisation will be taking its events to Kwara State in collaboration with the Ministry of Arts and Culture, and will also carry out more physical and online events in the country.

Ejeh asked the question, what is one billion rising? She answered the question by saying “1 in 3 women across the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. That’s One Billion Women and Girls. Every February, we rise – in countries across the world – to show our local communities and the world what one billion looks like and shine a light on the rampant impunity and injustice that survivors most often face. We rise through dance to express joy and celebrate the fact that we have not been defeated by this violence. We rise to show we are determined to create a new kind of consciousness – one where violence will be resisted until it is unthinkable.

“One Billion Rising is the biggest mass action to end violence against women and girls around the world. With coordinators and members in more than one hundred countries. OBR was born from the V-day movement founded by American writer V (Formerly Eve Ensler) author of the award winning play "Vagina Monologue.

“The campaign, which was launched on Valentine’s Day 2012, began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than One Billion Women and Girls,”Ejeh stated.

Proprietor, Altitude Schools, Mrs Ramota Abass, an experience teacher, educationist, while addressing the students advised them not to indulge in anti-social and immoral activities in the name of Valentine’s Day. She urged them to be good boys and girls in all they do. “It is not a day for you to commit immoral activities, no, it is not a day to say, this is my boyfriend, I want to go and sleep with him, no. we want you to know that very well, it is a day to know that you are your brother’s keeper, you are your sister’s keeper, you are a good child. Don’t commit sin because you are celebrating valentine, be a good girl, be a good boy.

“Your parents, they all know that today we are going to do Valentine’s Day, they were so happy, so we want you to know that valentine does not mean that you will be sleeping with yourselves, being in a lonely place, as I used to tell you, you are all friends, academic friends, it is not a day to go to one corner to mess yourselves up, especially the girls. Girls rule the world, a girl with vision today becomes a successful woman tomorrow if you have a good vision. It is not a vision of how can I get a man to beg for food, how can I go to the bedroom, my brother will send me to church and I will go somewhere else, no, that should not be your vision. Your vision should be a vision of career, you can be an accountant, a doctor, a lawyer, a teacher, lecturer, all good things in life; they will be your portion. In Jesus name it will be your portion, and in Allah’s name it will be your portion,” Mrs Abass stated.

We asked young people what freedom meant to them individually, their answers were amazing. On 14 February, 2023, One Billion Rising Nigeria organized rising events with younger people, and young people from King Chucks Schools and Altitude College, both situated in Lagos.

To create a new culture that promotes young people’s freedom from all forms of oppressions and exploitations is everyone’s responsibility. One Billion Rising  organises big  rising events/campaigns in Nigeria and globally to call attention to violence and all forms of oppressions against girls, women and marginalised persons. What is One Billion Rising?

1 in 3 women across the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. That’s ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS. Every February, we rise – in countries across the world – to show our local communities and the world what one billion looks like and shine a light on the rampant impunity and injustice that survivors most often face. We rise through dance to express joy and community and celebrate the fact that we have not been defeated by this violence. ONE BILLION RISING GLOBAL CAMPAIGNS

2013: People across the world came together to express their outrage, to strike, dance, and RISE in defiance of the injustices women suffer, demanding an end at last to violence against women

2014: One Billion Rising for Justice focused on the issue of justice for all survivors of gender violence, and highlighted the impunity that lives at the intersection of poverty, racism, war, the plunder of the environment, capitalism, imperialism, and patriarchy.

2015: Millions of activists in over 200 countries gathered to Rise for REVOLUTION, to change the paradigm, demand accountability, justice and systematic CHANGE

2016: The theme of Revolution continues with a call to focus on marginalized women and to bring national and international focus to their issues

2017: The call escalated to Rising in Solidarity against the exploitation of women and girls. In so many regions of the world, women are abused in multiple ways across layers of exploitation and oppression.

2018: The theme of SOLIDARITY remained the focus of One Billion Rising 2018, with the call to “Rise, Resist, Unite!” As we came into a time defined by a fierce escalation of fascist, imperialist, neo-liberal attacks on the lives of people around the world, the OBR call to “Rise, Resist and Unite” became more resounding. And the most marginalized – working class, minority and women on the margins in every part of the globe – who experience the impact and are forced to confront these attacks on their welfare and rights and homes, once again led the risings

2019 introduced “RISING: From a Campaign to a Way of Life” and the OBR Manifesta. As we continued to Rise to end violence against women – it was imperative now for us to expand our understanding of women’s oppression and exploitation in the context of capitalism, colonization, racism, imperialism, environmental plunder and war. We have been compartmentalized and divided for too long. Our Rising must now connect our specific oppression to the common universal humanity that binds us all.

2020: RAISE THE VIBRATION. RISE FOR REVOLUTION.this was a call to raise the vibration through action, art, connection, imagination and love.

2021: RISING GARDENS are a defiant creative call for revival, restoration and transformation. They are, in many ways, a compassionate call for justice – because one of the greatest injustices of our time has been the destruction and eradication of Mother Earth, parallel to the ongoing and escalating gender-based violence.

2022: RISE FOR THE BODIES OF ALL WOMEN, GIRLS & THE EARTH, created by the ONE BILLION RISING coordinators. Our 2022 call is to connect both in a deeper, more purposeful, political, transformative and yet also empowering, hopeful way. And to make this coming year a truly radical, bold, fearless escalation of artistic risings

2023: RISE FOR FREEDOM

This year we call on the world to RISE FOR FREEDOM. Freedom from Patriarchy and from all its progeny….capitalism, impunity, poverty, oppression, division, exploitation, shame, control, individualism, greed, violence…and in this Rising…CREATE THE NEW CULTURE

We are in the midst of a rising tide of right-wing nationalism, white supremacy, fascism, tyranny,  #1BillionRising  2023 theme and campaign: #RiseForFreedom & to #CreateTheNewCulture. The campaign addresses the devastating consequences of the ongoing vicious systems of patriarchy, imperialism, capitalism and racism in the world today and the destructive battle for power fought over women’s bodies and the body of the earth.

Created by a community of 47 OBR coordinators located across the globe, this year’s campaign will celebrate 10 years of OBR and urge communities worldwide to utilize art and activism, creative resistance events and gatherings, both online and offline, to demand an end to violence against women, girls and the planet and to shine a light on the rampant impunity and injustice that survivors most often face.

Events are taking place now and will continue through 22 April, #EarthDay. OBR creative resistance events will take various forms including artistic Rising and climate initiatives; new songs/anthems, poetry, documentary films, online discussions, panels & events; training with men; allies, flash mobs, and marches and more. OBR coordinators  launched the theme in their communities during #16DaysOfActivism.One Billion Rising events  also take place beyond the campaign periods based on the country coordinators schedule of events.

We urge individuals and organisations to to take action to end violence against girls, women and mother Earth by supporting One Billion Rising events in Nigeria, to create a new culture of freedom and peaceful co-existence. OBR Nigeria celebrates 25 years of V-Day, and 10 years of One Billion Rising by calling attention and encouraging everyone to Rise For Freedom!! Create The New Culture!!

Like the Earth that is nearing a calamitous end, right now women, girls and those impacted by #GenderBasedViolence are in a STATE OF EMERGENCY. It is time to Create the New Culture, a culture where we collectively share in commitment to end all forms of violence and exploitations.                                                                                                                                             One Billion Rising Nigeria calls attention to issue that need urgent attention and urge everyone to create a culture of resistance towards all forms of oppressive systems, policies and practices that further marginalises girls,  women, marginalised persons  and destroy the Earth.

Get involved by supporting our work.

Nigerians should vote APC candidates on March 18, every state should connect to National Grid, says Umenzekwe

A Chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and member, Federal Housing Authority, Chief Modestus Umenzekwe (Onwa Achina) has called on Nigerians to vote APC candidates in the forthcoming Governorship and State Assembly elections on Saturday, March 18, 2023.

Umenzekwe who spoke to the media on Tuesday added that voting APC candidates in the elections is tantamount to connection of those states to the national grid.

“I sincerely believe that there will be more benefits accruable to those states that will align themselves with the government party by casting their votes for APC in the Governorship and State Assembly elections because anyhow you look at it, there is likely to be less friction in their relationships with the new Federal Government, and the government at the centre will definitely see them as their own, therefore I implore all the states to give massive votes to my party, APC on Saturday. The more the merrier, we need more states. When you are connected to the centre through your governor or through the lawmakers, your state is better off,” he said.

Umenzekwe also urged Anambra people to vote for APC candidates for State Assembly positions in the state, adding that even though the government in the state is that of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), it is not impossible to enthrone a legislature in the state which has APC in majority. “My State is Anambra, you know that Anambra will not be on the ballot for the governorship, but there is going to be the state assembly election. I encourage our people to go out on mass and vote APC. With this I am sure that is the only way to ensure a robust legislature in the state, an assembly that will not be a rubber stamp to whatever the governor says, no, we need a healthy debate, we need synergy, we need cooperation, we want an assembly that will scrutinize the activities of the executive and perform their watchdog roles as   legislature effectively.

Umenzwkwe also stressed on the need for a peaceful election, calling on all gladiators to call their supporters to order so that the electorate will come out on mass and cast their votes for the candidate of their choice. “I want to use this opportunity to plead to Nigerians to eschew violence during the elections; violence does not pay, let the will of the electorate determine who is winner or loser; you can’t carry ballot boxes or waste lives and properties because you want your candidate to win, it is not good before God and man,” Umenzekwe advised.
