Assessors score LASU high at 3rd day of ongoing Science, Technology, Innovation Expo, Abuja 2023

The stand C4 of the Lagos State University Centre of Excellence for Sargassum Research (CESAR) was again the centre of attraction to assessors, exhibitors, investors, researchers, students, passers-by, visitors etc on Wednesday, 18th January, 2023 the Day 3 of the ongoing Science, Technology and Innovation Expo, Abuja 2023 holding at the Eagle Square Abuja.

Just as it was on Monday the day 1 of the expo where the Minister, and the Minister of State for Science, Technology and Innovation, Distinguished Senator Adeleke Olorunimbe Mamora and Chief Henry Ikechukwu Ikoh, Commissioner Ministry of Science and Technology in Lagos State, Mr Hakeem Fahm and many other dignitaries visited the stand of the LASU Centre of Excellence for Sargassum and Research.

The day 3 of the expo was not an exception as people started visiting the Centre stand immediately it was opened to have a glimpse of the following sargassum based research products which are  on display; 

Sargassun weeds, Sargassum-based Fish feeds, Poultry feeds, Pig feeds, Grasscutter feeds, Rabbit feeds, Alginate and Fucoidan, Blocks/Bricks, Ceiling boards and Catfish oil and Cream. The products no doubt attracted so much interest and attention due to the novel idea of transforming an hitherto sea weeds constituting nuisance/waste at the coastal areas to the above very veritable products. 

The Assessment Team put together by the Federal Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation to assess and evaluate every products brought to the Eagles Square for exhibition, on Wednesday, the day 3 of the expo visited the stand of the LASU CESAR for assessment. The strict and business-like assessment team leader  Dr. J. J. Ajakaiye wasted no time as he reeled out the criteria for the assessment which include; originality, creativity/innovativeness, cost effectiveness and efficiency, local raw materials, content/labelling/packaging, presentation, patent, contribution to national economic growth and sustainable development, potential for commercialization etc. 

For ease of assessment and directive of the assessment team, the LASU CESAR team had grouped its products into four categories; Animal Feeds (Fish, Pigs, Poultry, Grasscutter and Rabbit); Pharmaceutical (Vitamins A & C, Alginate and Fucoidan); Construction (Ceiling boards and bricks) and Cosmetics (Cat fish oil and organic body cream).

The assessment team interacted with LASU CESAR Team for over thirty (30) minutes and was really impressed with what they saw, heard during the interaction/assessment. The Assessment Team Leader who was very thorough and satisfied during the interaction/assessment remarked thus *"this is excellent but you must show us a prove of patent for your products or the stage of obtaining patent because this will give you property rights before the idea is stolen by other people"*. He concluded by congratulating the LASU CESAR Team for a good presentation. 

The representative of Lagos State Science Research and innovation Council (LASRIC), Dr. Iyabo Philips a Director at the Lagos State Ministry of Science and Technology had earlier given an overview of how CESAR came about, it's membership and the sponsorship role the Lagos State Government is playing to the Assessment Team before the Centre Leader Distinguished Professor Martins Anetekhai took charge of the presentation of every details during the assessment. He was supported by Professor Tosin Adu, Dr. Ronke Saibu, Mrs Blessing Nwatulegwu and other team members who gave useful information during the assessment. 

Immediately the assessment was over, the Commissioner Ministry of Science and Technology in Lagos State Mr Hakeem Fahm in company of the SSA to the governor of Lagos State on Science and Technology Mr Saheed Balogun visited the CESAR exhibition stand once again and they were both briefed on the successful outcome of the assessment. The soft spoken Commissioner averred  "...... this is impressive and very encouraging" he appreciated the Centre Leader and praised the entire CESAR team for their sacrifices and for fronting the frontier of excellence. 

The Abuja 2023 expo will officially come to an end on Friday, 20th January, 2023 with the President and Commander in Chief of Armed Forces General Muhammadu Buhari declaring it close.
