Devcoms Roundtable proffers techniques for Adolescents, Youths Sexuality RH information

Recently a Media Roundtable on the Practical Ways for Introducing Adolescents and Youths to Sexuality and Reproductive Health Information was called by Development Communications (DEVCOMS) Network. SUCCESS DAMIAN reports.

Issues of Sexuality and Reproductive Health in recent times have taken the front burners and the Media is seen as the veritable channel to disseminate and educate the young ones on the sensitive discourse, however there arose the need to also educate the same media on the appropriate ways to carry out their job on sexuality and reproductive Health information, hence the Media Roundtable.

Speaking on a paper titled Practical Ways for Introducing Adolescents & Youths to Sexuality & Reproductive Health Information, Wemimo Adebiyi, A Behavioral Management Coach, said it is best to start talking with children about sexuality early, adding that children are curious about their bodies and different kinds of relationships from a very early age.

In her words, “Their curiosity creates a natural opportunity to begin the conversation and start building a respectful and trusting relationship. For young children, you can start by teaching them the names of their body parts or asking if they know why girls and boys look different. When we talk to children about sex, it’s important to keep our conversation age appropriate.”

She said that providing young people with information that is age-appropriate makes it easier for them to understand that sex is a natural part of human and emotional development, but meant for an appropriate time by also avoiding saying things like “it is for daddy & mummy.

Adebiyi also said it makes it easier to talk with them about the more complicated aspects of sexual intimacy as they get older.

Also dwelling on sub-topic as Making Decisions about Sex, she added that Young people need to learn how to negotiate sexual experiences positively and responsibly. According to her, “Making safe and informed sexual decisions include: giving them correct and clear information about contraception, safer sex and STIs, encouraging them to talk about sex and its consequences with their partner coming up with ways to deal with unwanted sexual pressure.

Relying on statistics, she said “55 abortion rate reported yearly per 1,000 women, half of which are adolescents out of unsafe sex which resulted to unplanned pregnancy, adding that unsafe sex practices also expose the young ones to STIs and HIV with a prevalence of 25 per cent among adolescents in the southeastern part and 28 per cent in the northern part of the country.”

Adebiyi also stated that real names for body parts should be deployed in introducing the young ones to sexuality and reproductive health information. “Avoid calling private parts by cutesy, made-up names. It makes kids think that there is something weird or shameful about their bodies, and they’ll be less likely to tell you if someone touches them.”

Speaking on Creating Safe Spaces for Adolescents and Youth: The YEF Experience, Iwalola Akin-Jimoh, Executive Secretary, Youth Empowerment Foundation (YEF), a group with vision to see a proactive youth population with skills for positive change, commenced her talk by explaining who a youth is. She said a youth is a person between the ages of 15 and 24 years, while an adolescent is a child between the ages of 10 and 19 years.

Jimoh disclosed that Safe spaces from YEF programs and experience is a place where a person can freely express himself or herself without any threat. “A place of succor and safety; a safe space is not defined by homogeneity nor age group. Safe spaces can be situated within communities and public spaces and can change identities depending on use. Safe spaces can be within faith-based organisations and other facilities.”

On the Needs of Adolescents & Youth she said “As for all humans young people have a right and need for food, play, freedom of expression, shelter, right to free worship, education including correct and accurate age appropriate information on RH, safety and security,” adding that a lot of needs are however not met as a result of poverty, lack of awareness on the part of parents and guardians, with ‘how I was raised’ syndrome, carelessness and highhandedness.

She maintained that within the community, there are no safe spaces nor safe services for young people, adding that HIV is less of a threat than pregnancy as far as young people are concerned and that abortion still remained an easy way out of a precarious situation.

Success Damian:

The event which attracted a tumultuous crowd was held at St Patrick Training Institute Amukoko, Lagos during the weekend.

Further, she said “I made it a life philosophy to always assist those in need within my ability. As somebody who has gone through tick and thin in life, I know what it means to be in a state of ‘need’, therefore, I can boldly tell you that the triple factors of nature, understanding of what God requires of us and life experience combined to shape my act of generosity to humanity.”

She also spoke on his Foundation “It was my passion to put smiles on frowned faces, and joy in the sad minds that motivated the establishment of Hope Alive Foundation to reach out to people in need.”

Ezeude said the Foundation has carried out eye tests and giving out medicated classes to those with eye problems, empowered women and youth, and paid regular visits to hospitals and offsetting some of the bills of the indigent patients. She added that she has programmes for the children and always shares valuable items during festive periods within and beyond Ajeronmi Ifelodun.

She told the people that “Politics if successfully played, will result in governance and governance to me is about the good of the majority in society. Therefore to me, anybody who you know that can deliver and represent your interest and the interest of Ajeromi, you should support the person to emerge for the well-being of the public.

“In doing this, ethnicity, tribe and religion should not be the determinant factor rather the person who can represent the interest of majority and the entire public should be central, Ezeude stated.

Lagos is bleeding with over N1.2t debt, PDP Governorship Aspirant

Success Damian:

People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Governorship aspirant in Lagos State, Engr. Adedeji Doherty, has stated that with over N1.2 trillion debt profile, the state is bleeding to death.

Doherty was speaking at the endorsement of Dr. Emilia Ezeude for the Federal House of Representatives, Ajeronmi Ifelodun Federal Constituency by Non-Indigenes Elders Forum at St Patrick Training Institute Amukoko, Lagos during the weekend.

Doherty who has contested for the same position in 2007, 2011 and 2015, said passion to serve Lagos State people is his motivating factor to vie for the Governorship position. “We have to make things better, we have debt profile in Lagos State, when I was contesting in 2007, the debt profile of Lagos State was hovering around 200million or something like that, but today it is at N1.2 trillion.”

In his words, “So when you see a state being drown like that someone has to come up and be counted. I have to come out because of you, I have to come out because of my children, I have to come out because of the young people that are growing every day in Lagos State.”

He said he is coming to do things differently by halting the increasing debt profile, “Debt kills a company, I have companies, and I know what debt can do, I have taken one of my companies out of a 1.8 billion debt, it took me seven years to do that.

“But when you are the one that took the loan, you can try and reduce the debt, it will take you may be 10-15 years, there is no governor that is going to stay that long, so there has to be a change of government so all these things can be halted, so that we can stop the bleeding, right now Lagos State is bleeding, that is number one.

“Two, education is in the lowest ebb in Lagos, look at our people, they go to school, but it is like they didn’t go to school and whose fault is it? The government of course. Employment, there is youth unemployment throughout Lagos State, who created that unemployment, it is the APC Government.

“Thirdly if you look at our pregnant women, how much does it cost to have a baby in our hospital? How many of them can afford the hospital bill, then they go to quacks, the woman dies, the child dies, and there is no respite. Do we have a good hospital in Lagos State built by Lagos State government over the past 20 years, the answer is no. Do we have a good university built in Lagos State over the past 20 years? A Library over the past 20 years, long bridge over the past 20 years? The answer is no,” Doherty queried rhetorically.

In a lighter note Doherty said “What have we gotten from this government over the past 20 years? I cannot say we have not gotten anything, we have succeeded in gotten contracts and development meant for local council men like bus-stops, flyover in Lekki. Look at the two bridges just between Bourdillon and Lekki, how much are they taxing you, the people are being taxed, they collect development levy, then you now pay toll again”

He appeal to the media to highlight the anomalies in APC government “Adedeji is just one person, I cannot do it all, because anybody that comes out for Lagos State Governor is putting his life on the line. Do you see any orderly with me? Do you see any gun brandishing people with me? No, because I stand for the truth and it is only the truth that can set us free.

Nigeria requires 750-1000 kilowatts per 100 persons to enhance development, Baroness Chalker

Success Damian:
Former British Minister and President of Royal Geographical Society, Lynda Baroness Chalker of Wallassey has disclosed that Nigeria just like any other nations of the world requires 750-1000 kilowatts per 100 persons to ensure development.

Speaking at Lagos State University at the weekend during An Afternoon with Baroness Chalker which has the theme ‘Africa in a Competitive World: Business and Investment,’ she stated that access to affordable and regular power supply is the engine to industrialization. She said that United States has 3000kw per 100; United Kingdom, 500kw per 1000, Ghana is 66, but Nigeria still struggling to make it 25 per 100.

While stating that competitiveness is essential to a country’s overall prosperity, Chalker stressed that there are four key factors that are used to assess a country’s competitiveness which include but not restricted to economic performance, government and business efficiency and growth, and infrastructure development.

On economic growth she said reduction in government debt, strengthening international trade, business efficiency, ease of doing business, corporate governance and an increase in business activity to drive up competitiveness and steady digitization are indices of economic growth.

To her, assessing competitiveness across Africa, there were mixed picture which are three fold, foreign direct investment, revenue generation, options for finance, infrastructure development, population and job market.

Chalker said ‘According to the world investment report 2018, (FDI) flows to Africa slumped to $42billion in 2017, a 21% decline from 2016. While Africa is still the 2nd fastest region globally by capital investment, it is buoyed by North Africa especially Morocco. FDI in Morocco, she said, grew by 23% in 2017 to $2.7billion, mainly as a result of sizable investment in the automotive sector.

The former Minister said regrettably FDI projects into Nigeria fell in number, from 49 to 35, in 2017, adding that many projects have been started, but are not yet completed. She gave an instance of a project like the roads around Murtala Muhammed Airport which often is the first glimpse of Nigeria that an incoming overseas visitor to Lagos has.

On his part, the Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun, welcoming Chalker said Lasu is increasingly becoming a crucible of innovation, development and leadership training. “We are an institution and an administration that should be taken seriously as choice partners of development.”

He further said ‘Today our online Distant Learning and Research Institute is being structured to serve as the benchmark for distance-learning education in Nigeria. There is no gainsaying the fact that LASUCOM, our medical school is one of the best and most sought after in the country and that the Lagos State Teaching Hospital, Ikeja is one of the best equipped’

He said the crucial link between education and industry is research and development, ‘with the right endowments the university can provide research-evidenced solutions for industry, develop solutions, technology and innovations to enhance local content and competitiveness of the industrial sector.

Fagbohun said Funding for such researches are currently paltry where existent, adding that rather that fledgling technical departments, the private sector can invest in R&D in partnership with tertiary institutions, which are better equipped and are happy for industry to own patents resulting from researches they have sponsored.

Fagbohun advocated that as previously, government should revert to recruiting the best brains on graduation to man the bureaucracies and enhance the capacity for policy formulation and implementation.

Articulated Agenda 2019 set to welcome Atiku to Lagos

Success Damian:
Lagos State Coordinator for Articulated Agenda 2019, a pressure group for Atiku Abubakar Presidency, Bishop Victor David Enweruezo, has stated that preparations are on top gear to welcome the Presidential aspirant to Lagos.

Enwereuzo said “Atiku Abubakar has been tested, he has been in government, he has been a genuine business man, who has created jobs for well-meaning Nigerians, and also he has promised restructuring.”

The Coordinator was speaking to the media after a meeting of the group in Lagos on Saturday.

He disclosed that Restructuring is what Nigerians are clamouring for. In his words “Restructuring is the only thing Nigerians need from anybody that should be the president so that we can all go back home and develop our states and then create jobs, have education, bring in expertise, professionals, and develop; and stop all these intimidations going on in the country.

“We all go abroad to buy various vehicles including Tokumbo, but here we have seen graduates, and undergraduates who have managed to manufacture airplane, vehicles; if we have true federalism, the governors of each state would support such people. With all these the rest of the world will be coming here to see our vision and to see what we are capable of doing,”

On preparations to host Atiku he said “We are creating awareness, and I am so glad that various interest groups in Lagos, market associations, professionals are with us, but not just creating awareness for Atiku to be welcomed to Lagos, but also creating awareness on people getting their PVCs which is the right they have as citizens to vote in Atiku and to vote out the present administration.

“We want to welcome him in a grand style, and we hope this will welcome other times that we are looking forward to, we want to appreciate him for what he has been doing. We want to tell the people, this is the man that will deliver Nigeria, this is the man, prepare to meet with him.”

He said Atiku’s coming to Lagos is not a hidden agenda.

Bishop David said “Atiku is not coming with arms and ammunition, however, my appeal is that Lagosians should have foresight, it is an issue that affects every well-meaning Nigerian, and as such Lagosians should welcome him with open arms, we don’t want those that will cause nuisance, we don’t want thugs”

Enwereuzo stated the Articulated Agenda is working closely with PDP, saying the group has had in audience PDP ward leaders who have recognized and associated with them.

According to him Articulated Agenda 2019 as a vision was founded by Chief Dr. Emeka Kalu, having seen the political ineptitude of the present Government, designed the pressure group to persuade the former Vice President, His Excellency Atiku Abubakar, “and asked him to vie for the post of Presidency of Nigeria.

We have 36 states coordinators in the Federation, this is a pressure group to make sure we are able to persuade people, convince people to get their PVCs; that is our first agenda, and also for the people to see the reason why Atiku should come on board.”

Devcoms Roundtable: Nigeria becomes world 3rd most populous country by 2050

Development Communications (DEVCOMS) Network, a media-development, capacity-building non-governmental organization coordinated by experienced development journalists recently organized a Media Roundtable to create a platform for the discussion of key issues in Maternal and Child Health focusing on Family Planning. SUCCESS DAMIAN reports.
Themed Family Planning; Cost Effective Strategy in Tackling Maternal Mortality, Agunloye Oyebola delivered a paper titled ‘The Nigerian Population and Maternal Mortality/Maternal Health.

Employing the help of statistics Oyebola stated that the current population of Nigeria is within the region of 196 Million and 200 Million and that Nigeria’s population is equivalent to 2.57% of the total world population, making Nigeria number 7 in the list of most populous countries in the world. He added that 51.0 % of the population is urban (49.0% in rural settlements). He added that the median age in Nigeria is 17.9 years.

In his paper Oyebola also stated that the United Nations made projection that the overall population of Nigeria will reach about 398 million by the end of the year 2050.

“If current figures continue, the population of Nigeria will be over 746 million. Nigeria is also estimated to surpass the population of the United States of America to become the 3rd most populous country by 2050 based on current projections/trends.”

He disclosed some of the factors that bring about growth in population to include Religion. “Religions like Islam encourage large families, polygamous system and early marriage. Christianity is mostly anti-abortion and prohibits some forms of contraceptives. The lack of education especially as related to population education, sex education and the lowering of infant mortality and birth rates; In many cultures in Nigeria, male offspring are more highly valued than females for a variety of reasons (like carrying on the family name, greater; upper-body strength for physical labor), which leads to the common practice of continuous child birth in an attempt to have male children.”

The expert talked on the Link between population and maternal mortality saying about 40% of all pregnancies in developing countries are unintended. “When these pregnancies result in births, they contribute to higher fertility rates and thus unnecessary population increase. Currently Nigeria’s fertility rate stands at 5.5% (average of 6 children per woman)

“This increases the woman’s chances of maternal complications/mortality. The number of pregnancy related deaths and the overall risk of maternal mortality would decline if fertility decreased among adolescents and young women”

Lead Speaker Dr. Olufunke Olamigoke of Lagos Island Maternity Hospital delivering a paper on “Family Planning: Cost Effective Intervention in Tackling Maternal Death” said Maternal mortality is a major public health issue especially in developing countries, adding that Maternal mortality is the death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy, irrespective of the duration and site of the pregnancy, from any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management but not from incidental or accidental causes.”

She disclosed that an estimated 358,000 women die each year throughout the world from complications of pregnancy and child birth. She added that the 10 countries with the highest Maternal mortality ratio are in Africa and an estimated 14% of maternal deaths globally occur in Nigeria (United Nations Economic Commissions for Africa, 2013).

Quoting 2013 NDHS, she said the maternal mortality ratio was 576 per 100,000 live births for the seven year period preceding the survey, adding that the lifetime risk of maternal death indicates that 1 in 30 women in Nigeria will have a death related to Family Planning.

Olamigoke mentioned some of the causes of Maternal Mortality to include Obstetrics Haemorrhage; Hypertensive Disorders; Unsafe Abortion; Obstructed Labour; Postpartum Infections; Anaemia; and others such as Malaria, HIV and Diabetes.

She said Risk of maternal death increase if a woman is either too old, too young or has many children or closely spaced children
She mentioned the Role of Family Planning in reducing Maternal Mortality which include “ensuring a woman’s body has sufficient time to recover before another pregnancy. Increasing antenatal care coverage, increasing proportion of births attended by skilled Health Personnel, preserving healthy status, and improving economic well-being of the family”

She stated that part of the reasons the public is no accessing  Family Planning include claim of Side effects; Low female literacy rates; Socio-Cultural values; Lack of Spousal or Partner approval; Inaccessibility of health services; Health workers’ attitude
She then said the way forward should include Female education; Targeted and sustained Public Health awareness campaigns; Increased availability of Family Planning Services; increased training for health care providers.
