Nwokedi in triple celebrations, calls on government to end xenophobia in South Africa

Success Damian:
High Chief Chika C. Nwokedi, Okpoko 1, recently bagged the title Nwata Ya Na Chiyadinamma 1 of Ikwuano Obodoukwu. This was after his birthday celebration and dedication of his bouncing baby boy, all in August this year, making it a triple celebration for him. He spoke on his chieftaincy title, Igbo Buru Otu Social Club and other national issues, SUCCESS DAMIAN reports.

While hosting the media in his office, Chief Nwokedi expressed joy over God’s abundant blessings upon him. He said, “It is by His grace, not my power or by money, there were some of my mates that died last year, last month and even last week, so to be alive today is not by my power.”

Speaking on his works that gave rise to the conferment of the title on him, he said “I was surprised when I saw the letter from our king, that they are giving me a chieftaincy title on August 6, I said how can this be, but my brothers and friends said I should accept it, that it is a very big honour. As you know my people don’t give title because you have money but they give title by merit.”

He narrated the overwhelming support he received from his friends across the country. “After acknowledging the letter from the king my friends brought a convoy of 11 vehicles and we headed to Obodoukwu in Ideato North Local Government of Imo State. It was a very big honour for my people to see my friends from Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, they all travelled with me. For me it is an honour, perhaps there is something I am doing that made them to travel to my own village with me and stayed two days before going back.”

According to Nwokedi “What happened is that when you are doing what is good the people know. The Bible says whatsoever a man sows he shall reap. In my village I don’t have money, but I know I have built three houses for people that don’t have. One man lost his wife but he didn’t have house, I built three bedroom flat and put tiles; the same tiles I put in my place is the same tiles I put that place.

I will not give you what I don’t like, so people were surprised and some of my people that lost their machine, their only means to get money, so immediately I heard it I travelled to the village, I called them, that we are going to Orlu to get new machines for them. I bought new machine N250, 000 each for four of them. This is my little way of helping the needy. So when they were compiling names for those to be honoured my name was mentioned and the whole cabinet said yes. My people were impressed the way my profile was read, even many of the things I forgotten, so I am happy.”

Being the head of various associations in the country, he stated that leadership is from God, Nwokedi also disclosed that he intends to replicate his humanitarian activities to the entire good people of Imo State, and that was why he is declaring interest in the Imo State governorship position.

He also expressed strong support for his wife’s new church, saying it is the lord’s doing.

Nwokedi who is the Founder and President of Igbo Buru Otu Social Club of Nigeria told the media that on Saturday, September 7, he will be assembling about 4 doctors who will conduct medical tests on Igbo Buru Otu members, free. He also averred that he was planning to enter into collaboration with some hospitals that will provide medical services to members who cannot afford such, adding that bills from such services will be taken care of by the club.

He said it is better to attend to people’s needs when they are alive rather than attending to them when they are dead. “Many people stay one year, two years without medical checkup, and that is why we are bringing the doctors to carry out a general test on our members. The test is a general test and may cost up to N4000 for each person, but nobody will pay one naira and you know our number.”

Nwokedi also spoke on some national issues, including the killings of Nigerians in South Africa and the ban on importation of rice and its attendant hardship on the masses.

He called on government to ensure that the attacks on Nigerians in South Africa are brought to a permanent end  “They should look into what is the cause of the problem and stop it before it causes tribal war, but war is not good because I believe in peace. People that are killed are human beings.”

Speaking on the ban on importation of rice, he said the customs has declared that the rice is not good for human consumption and that people change the bags of the rice and present them as wholesome, that is why there is ban on rice importation but “if Nigerians can produce their own rice, my brother, it is good.”
