Igboburuotu decries shortage of manpower in NPF, says Nigeria needs 5million police personnel

Success Damian:

Igboburuotu Social Club of Nigeria, a group that supports Nigerian Police Force (NPF), helps the down-trodden and empowerment Nigerians, has lamented the myriad challenges facing Nigeria Police Force, with a call for the recruitment of over 5million personnel to adequately police the country.

President of the group, High Chief Chika Nwokedi, (Nwata yana chiya dinamma 1 of Obodoukwu) made the revelations at the monthly meeting of the organization at Rainbow Hall, Fire Junction, Ijegun Lagos on Saturday.

He asked “How can police work? We are over 200 million people in Nigeria and police is only 300,000; from this number, they give governors, senators, House of Reps, VIPs, with this we have only 200,000 left. How can this number secure this country? It is impossible, so they should increase the number of police personnel at least 5million will be okay,” he said.

High Chief Nwokedi also called on the government to equip the police, “Today police cannot quench riot, in the olden days police had rubber bullet, small tear-gas, and hot water, they are no more, police are not meant to fire normal bullet during riot; so they should equip Nigerian police.”

On the challenges confronting formation of South East security outfit he said there is no challenge, “To form security is not easy, it must take time so that they can do better, nobody wants to make mistake, it is not one state, it is about five states. My take is that what takes time to achieve is good than when you rush it. You are faced with who and who do put there, who do you trust? Before the Yorubas launched Amotekun, they have started the plan long time ago; not one month; not one year, so security must take time before you achieve your aim,” Nwokedi maintained.

On the rumour that Igboburuotu is splitting into two, Nwokedi responded “What caused it was that in January last year, I removed some members of the executives, so those that were removed became angry, and they began moves to form and destroy the club, but there is no way Igboburuotu will be divided into two, you can form another group, and call it another thing.

“I am the founder of Igboburuotu and God is with us and that is why it is working. Some of them were not working according to the vision of the club that was why they were removed, but if they show remorse we are going to give them back the executive ID card,” Nwokedi said.

Speaking on the level of progress of the club’s NGO he said “You can see we have started, we bought 20 bags of rice, and 20 cartons of Indomie, which were shared to the less-privileged, and N50,000 each to start business, all these things we give out free of charge. We do that two times in a year, not just to our members but to outsiders also.

On what the club has in store for year 2020, he said “We have bought some vehicles, we inscribed our name on them and we asked interested members to pick them and drive then pay us by installment, about four of them. We also want to buy keke (tricycle) for people, again any Igbo person that has case but because of money as far as you did not steal, you did not kill, we will fight for you. As you may be aware last year we spent nothing less than N5million on Nigeria Police, and we gave them awards, so that is why God has been faithful to us,” Nwokedi asserted.

On his part, Comrade Ifeanyi Iguegbe, the Secretary General of the club said the group is growing in limbs and bounds with over 1000 membership, adding that Igboburuotu has members in and outside the Nigeria.

Speaking on the challenges being faced by the club, Iguegbe said, “This association was formed to fight against intimidation. We don’t want somebody to intimidate you because you are an Igbo, but the major challenge we face here is financial, because all our empowerments cost money, there was a reported case of a woman, somebody brought her here, we gave her a bag of rice and N50,000 to start business and many others, where does the money come from?

"The widows among us also, we go to motherless babies, so we spend a lot of money on people and it is drying our purse,” Iguegbe said.
